What we like
- Neutral interface that doesn't push one service's content
- Dolby Vision and HDR10+ support at a modest price
- Long-range wireless receiver genuinely improves weak-signal rooms
- Voice remote controls TV power and volume
- The simplest interface for non-technical users
What gives us pause
- 8 GB of storage fills up if you install dozens of channels
- No Ethernet option (the Ultra has one)
- Roku's home screen now shows more promotional tiles than it used to
- No smart-home hub or gaming ambitions
Who it's for
Most people. If you don't know which streaming device to buy and you don't live deep in Apple's or Amazon's ecosystem, this is the answer. It hides behind the TV, it works with every major service, and the remote is the one guests understand instantly.
Design and setup
The stick plugs straight into HDMI and disappears behind the TV. Setup takes about twenty minutes including the software update, and activation is free at roku.com/link. The power cable doubles as the Wi-Fi antenna — a quiet piece of engineering that makes this stick notably better in rooms far from the router than budget rivals.
Interface and everyday use
Roku's grid of apps hasn't changed much in a decade, and that's a compliment. Search is genuinely neutral: look up a movie and Roku lists every service carrying it, ordered by price, without promoting its own content store first. The one frustration is the growing row of promotional placements on the home screen, though they're easy to ignore.
Picture and sound
4K, Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and Dolby Atmos passthrough are all supported on paper and widely confirmed by owners. Automatic display detection matches the TV's capabilities during setup. Atmos requires a compatible soundbar or receiver — the stick passes it through but doesn't decode it.
The remote
The included voice remote handles TV power and volume through HDMI-CEC or IR, which means one remote for the whole setup. Voice search is accurate for titles and actor names. What you don't get: backlit buttons or the rechargeable battery of the Voice Remote Pro sold separately.
